Griffith Report Essays - California, Free Essays, Term Papers Griffith Report During my visit to the Griffith Observatory I had a great experience there. In the front lawn there was statues of famous scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Isaac Newton, and others. When I arrived at the museum, I noticed many appealing things immediately. I became aware that visitors can actually become observers from outside of the building. For example the museum offered telescopes for me to use to look into the sky. When I walked further along the site I notice a Solar System Lawn Model. Engraved in the ground was the Milky Way (our solar system), and a Sunset and Moonset Radial observer. Since the observatory was in so many movies, including: Yes man, Funny People, and the Terminator. To me it looked like a mansion. It had a large field of grass that on looked the Los Angeles Horizon. It had a patio where visitors can watch the sunset and sunrise. It also had a section to take pictures in front of the Hollywood sign. As I entered the observatory I knew I would come home with information I had never knew about. There where so many things to touch and look at. I wanted to spend every minute observing the displays. The walls and the ceilings have large beautiful murals painted all along the ceiling, like something from a cathedral in Rome. I was told, they were created to show the connection between science and mythology, as well as the connection between the earth and the sky. There were even murals of all the Astronomers who helped develop Griffith's idea. The center of the building included a large Pendulum, which was a device used to measure the earth's rotation. It was the observatories main attraction and had required perfect creation in order for it to be exact. As everyone was gathered around this object, we wondered how it worked. At the bottom of the floor was a measuring device with domino like blocks rotating around it. It worked in the strangest way I can imagine, as the ball moved back and forth it would knock down the blocks according to the earth's rotation. There were many sections at the Griffiths Observatory that had hands-on activities for me to understand. One for example was a machine that determined the temperature of my body,called a UAV Ray generator. I moved aimlessly around the machine to see how hot or cold I was. As it turns out, my ears are actually colder than any other part on my body. To me it seemed like it was looking through heat vision goggles. As if I was looking for someone through a scope, dead at night. I then knowingly, started grabbing random objects to find out the temperature. It was amusing at first but I later got into trouble. Checking out this demonstration is something I would recommend for new visitors. Throughout the time I spent at the Griffith's Observatory, I learned a lot about our galaxy. It had many additional facts about our solar system, as well as our planet. In addition, it was very neat to see the Los Angeles basin with its city lights and fast paced atmosphere. I would recommend going to this museum for a family trip or school event. I learned a lot about the different types of moons, stars and the elements of the periodic table. It was also fascinating to learn about the pendulum in order to figure out the earth's time and rotation. I learned a lot about astronomy that day. Overall my visit to the observatory was a great experience for me to take upon and will most likely be going again.

Helping an Ignorant Society So many people go through life thinking that someone who is different from them is bad, unintelligent, out of the norm and sometimes even worse. Discrimination occurs all the time because we are so ignorant about our differences. In elementary school children often notice that someone has a different skin color, speaks English funny, or sometimes that people are fat or ugly. The school children make fun of these people because they are different from what they are used to. As you grow older you do not let go of these stereotypes. People put labels on other people and do not realize that they are even discriminating. In our society it is normal to make jokes about different religions and cultures, and no one tries to stop the prejudice. We often hear the phrase its a free country, I will say what I want, if our country is free, then why cant people who are different that your average American be free too? Why do they have to deal with discrimination? Our colleges need to offer a progr am that emphasizes the fact that everyone is different, and teach about our differences. Knowing that we are different will show people that our differences are not bad, but rather, that they are good. As children we love and admire our families. Our parents teach us our morals and values, and we learn what is right from wrong. We are punished when we are bad, and rewarded when we are good. These things make us the people that we are. We all keep our values close to our hearts, as bell hooks points out in her essay Keeping Close to Home: Class and Education, with these words, While I often needed more money, I never needed a new set of beliefs and values(96). No matter how hard our life is at any point in time, our values will stay with us always. That is why education starts from the moment you are born. First you learn through your senses, you see colors and learn to tell the differences from your parents and siblings. You know who you can trust and who is mean. The first five years are the most influential of a childs entire life. Since education starts at this early age, I feel that parents are responsible to teach their children social skills. The parents need to explain why we are all different and that our differences are good, otherwise we would all be exactly the same, and that would be boring.

Investigating the Properties of pH The manufacture’s claim is that Sensodyne toothpaste micro hardens tooth enamel to help protect against the effects of acid wear, helps stop the twinges of pain from sensitive teeth formulated with low abrasivity, neutral pH and gentle yet effective cleaning system. To find out if the manufactures claim on Sensodyne toothpaste is the correct level of pH. I expect the Sensodyne toothpaste to be a neutral pH level as the manufactures claim that this products pH level is neutral. This would be indicated by a level of pH 6 and 7. The equipment needed for this practical * Sensodyne (toothpaste) Universal indicator * Universal paper * pH meter * Petri dish x 3 * Measuring cylinder x 6 * Wooden stick * Distilled water * Tap water * Ruler Method 1. Test the distilled water and tap water for the pH level to see if it were neutral so it wouldn’t make a difference to the results. 2. Set up 3 petri dishes and 3 measuring cylinders 3. Measure 10mls of tap water. Add water to the petri dish and add 5cm of Sensodyne (toothpaste) into each petri dish and repeat this step 3 times. 4. Measure 10mls of distilled water and add to the measuring cylinders as well as adding 5cm of Sensodyne (toothpaste) and repeat this step 3 times. . Mix the substances together with the wooden stick. 6. Put universal indicator (liquid) into the petri dish repeat this step 3 times. Record the results from each petri dish. 7. Put universal indicator (paper) into the measuring cylinder repeat this step 3 times Record the results from each measuring cylinder. 8. Set up pH meter, Put the pH meter into the measuring cylinder record the pH reading and repeat this step 3 times for a reliable. The pH was discovered to be between 6 and 7 in all the tests done * The manufacturers’ claim was the pH level of the sensodyne (toothpaste) was neutral. My hypothesis was that the toothpaste was pH neutral and this was supported by the results. * I compared distilled water and tap water because of the different chemicals mixed with the water, but the results showed no difference so it didn’t affect the pH. The pH meter showed little varying but not too much this could be that the pH meter is out or that there could be something wrong with the meter because with my supported evidence its unlikely to be wrong. To improve this experiment would be to test with more than one pH meter to see if there’s a difference in comparison. Otherwise it may be more efficient if there were more tests done for more support towards the result. * My independent variable is the sensodyne (toothpaste) because in every experiment I used the same amount of sensodyne. The dependant variable was the pH levels were I did not have control over what the pH level would indicate. This is the reason the results are reliable because I repeated the steps three times in each test and continued to get the same results. This experiment could be improved by obtaining samples of toothpaste from a variety of locations. This will identify and inconsistency’s in the product itself. Conclusion * The experiment found that the manufactures claim of pH is correct and it is a neutral pH with supported evidence. Teeth would be affected by acidic toothpaste or alkaline toothpaste. Therefore a pH between 6 and 7 is an appropriate toothpaste . This sensodyne (toothpaste) is designed to help people with sensitive teeth.

Destiny and Frankenstein Essay

â€Å"Destiny was too potent, and her immutable laws had decreed my utter and terrible destruction.† Victor Frankenstein says this right before telling Walton his story.Destiny played an important role in the book Frankenstein. Victor sees it as the force that caused his downfall. He blames most of what has happened on destiny. At first it was his destiny to build the monster, afterwards he says it is his destiny to destroy it. Victor feltas if some force was making him experiment, that some force was making him make the monster and he had no control over it. This is why when he was building the monster he shut him self off from everything else and committed himself to his experiment. He didn’t have to do this but something was driving him to, and it might have been his curiosity and his wanting to cheat death, or play god, or do something no one else had ever done before, but also, he may have had those characteristics because he was destined to have them. Maybe this a ll happened so he and others can understand that you shouldn’t play god, but then after he built the monster it was his destiny to destroy it. As a result of Victor’s actions, many of his loved ones died, Elizabeth, William, Justine, and his father. After Victor made the monster his destiny became to be punished for it, but could Victor have prevented all this? Maybe, and maybe not. The answer to that question depends on whether you believe in destiny or not. Is destiny really so powerful that Victor had no control over it? Could Victor’s destiny have been different if he hadn’t built the monster? Could Victor have sustained from building the monster, or was destiny too powerful? How about the part when Victor destroys the female monster, what would have happened if Victor hadn’t destroyed it, or was it his destiny to destroy it? Later on in the book he follows the monster into the cold, what if he didn’t, would he have still died? In all of this Victor made decisions, he decided whether or not to go off to college, he decided whether or not to build the monster, he decided whether or not to build the female, he decided whether or not to chase after the monster, but where these really his decisions, or was it his destiny to end up on Walton’s ship? Victor told Walton his story and showed what wanting to explore into the unknown can lead to, in the end, Walton’s ship turns around and decides not to find the North Pole. I believe that it was Victor’s destiny for all this to happen because in the end all that he has done was told to teach Walton a lesson. Destiny is said to be a powerful force which determines your future. If you believe in destiny, you believe that everyone was put on this earth for a reason and everything you do is for a reason. Believing in destiny means that when you do something, even though you might think you are making a decision on your own, you are really carrying out your destiny. I do believe that destiny does have a big part on peoples lives. I believe that many of the decisions you make, you make them because it was your fate to make them. There are many examples in people’s lives that can make you think, what would have happened if I had done this differently? Or, was it my fate for this to happen, or just the results of my mistakes. A couple years ago my aunt died in a train accident, and everyone started thinking, if she had been on a different train, or if she was late and couldn’t get on the train, or if she hadn’t been on the trip, would she still have died? I believe that it was her destiny to go on that train because it was her time to die. Another example of this is about this girl that I know, when she was younger her parents, brother and sister died in a car accident. She always regrets that she stayed home sick on that day and didn’t die right along with them. But I think that she was spared for a reason, maybe she’ll make a difference in someone’s life. Destiny is a very powerful thing. Many people think factors can alter destiny, one being not taking responsibilities for your actions, which is what Victor did. He refused to blame what happened on himself. If you believe in destiny too much, you slack off and don’t try to change for the better, and you donâ₠¬â„¢t take care of yourself because you think, â€Å"whatever happens it is going to be the same no matter what I do because it is my destiny and its been already decided.† In the book Victor blamed most of the things that happened on destiny and didn’t take responsibility for most of them. He refused to blame what happened as his own doing. When he was building the monster, he didn’t try to stop himself, when the monster came to life he ran away, he left Elizabeth alone for a second on his wedding night thinking he was the one the monster was after, he then chased after the monster thinking it was his destiny to do so which caused his death. He believed everything that happened was his destiny and that he could not have altered it. When you believe in destiny you try to do what you think your destiny has planned out for you, and even if you don’t you still do what was planned, even if you’re wrong about your destiny it always catches up with you. Lets say some guy thinks its his destined is to become a doctor, he tries and he tries and he becomes one but later on he realizes being a lawyer is the job for him, because that wa s his destiny. Some people who believe in destiny slack of because they think that whatever happens, I couldn’t have prevented it, they might lets say start smoking and think if I die from this its because it was my destiny to do so. Then they die from it and some people think it may have been prevented, but I believe that even if he didn’t believe in destiny he would have taken up smoking because the way he would die had already been decided for him. Lets say someone commits suicide, people always think it could have been prevented, but I believe they died because it was their destiny, if it wasn’t their time to die yet, they may have tried to commit suicide but wouldn’t have succeeded. So in reality you cant even control when you die, like when Napoleon tried to kill himself with that powerful poison and failed, it wasn’t his time to die yet. So in conclusion I believe that everything that happened to Victor was the result of destiny. I don’t believe that it happened because he gave in too much to his curiosity. I believe it was his destiny to have this curiosity, to look into the unknown and to try to have the power to create life. What led him to this was the death of his mother this made him want to try to reanimate the dead, it was his mother’s destiny to die so that Victor’s destiny would be fulfilled. So it wasn’t Victor’s characteristics that led him to fall, he had those characteristics because he was destined to fall.
